Smile makeover or Porcelain Veneer Preparation Instructions: After Preparation
The following information is a useful guide of aftercare after smile makeover, porcelain veneer, dental crowns or bridge preparation.
If local anaesthetic is used
The effects of local anaesthetic normally last 3-4 hours. To avoid damage to your tongue, cheeks and lips, you should avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off. Also avoid hot drinks or food if you are very numb.
- Avoid sticky or hard foods (including chewing gum). This can loosen the veneers, dental crowns or dental bridges.
- Brush the gum margins gently and thoroughly using a soft toothbrush. Use Retardex mouthwash twice a day, rinsing for 2 minutes each time. It is essential to have healthy, clean gum margins for the veneer fitting appointment. the same applies to dental crowns or dental bridges.
- Avoid excessive spicy foods or red wine (causes staining of the temporary veneers, crowns or bridges).
- Use a Sonicare toothbrush or a Water-Pik if you have this.
- Your trial smile is in one piece and may feel a bit tight.
- Please take your painkillers if necessary.
- You will not be able to floss between the temporary veneers as they will be all joined together.
For patients who have had laser gum recontouring of gum lift
- Please make sure to brush over the area that was laser contoured very gently, yet thoroughly (TIP: Put your toothbrush under hot water to soften it. Then apply a small amount of Corsodyl gel and gently massage the gums).
- Use a warm salt water rinse twice a day (1/2 teaspoon salt and warm water).
Important
- Please avoid eating and hot beverages until the anaesthesia wears off.
- It is normal to feel some sensitivity in the area worked on the day of your preparation and the day after.
- If you feel anything problems during your temporarisation stage, please contact the cosmetic dentist.
