Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) is a dental procedure that is used to treat an infected root canal system of the teeth. This is a very common procedure in many dental clinics in Essex. Root canals are also performed in cases where there is extensive damage to the teeth pulp. This can happen in cases where there is pulp inflammation from trauma to the teeth or if extensive restorative work is done on the teeth. Root canal treatment helps to preserve the teeth without having to resort to extraction.

The procedure of a root canal is done under a local anesthetic. The cosmetic dentists then drills into the teeth's pulp cavity to remove the infected pulp. After thoroughly cleaning the root canal,a filling made of gutta-percha is used to fill the cavity that is left. After this,a dental crown is placed on the teeth to strengthen them.

Root canal treatment procedure first involves cleaning the root canal. This is followed by a thorough disinfection and lastly the space is filled. Many cosmetic dentistry clinics in Essex perform this procedure. To determine whether your teeth might be in need of a root canal, your cosmetic dentist will look out fore various signs such as:

• Severe toothache especially when pressure is applied to the teeth or during the chewing process.

• The teeth are extremely sensitive to heat or cold. This feeling persists even when the substance that was causing it is removed.

• Darkening or discolouration of the teeth.

• Tenderness or swelling of the gums sorrounding the teeth.

The root canal treatment requires the patine to sometimes visit the cosmetic dentist on more than one occasion. Molars usually have more than one root canals and these require more work than incisors. In other cases, the root canals might be very narrow and require the dentist to first enlarge the cavities before cleaning is done. Most root canals are successful. In a few cases, however, complications can develop. One of the causes for these is a crack that was not detected by the dentist. The filling might also be improperly done and this can lead to reinfections developing.

To check on the condition of the root canals, the dentist places a cold or hot object on the teeth. He then gently taps on the teeth to check the patient's response. X-rays are also used to determine the condition of the bone around the teeth. To check whether the pulp is still alive,an electric pulp tester is used. To prevent infections ,the dentist takes extra care and observes strict hygiene. Antibiotics are given to the patient before and after the root canal treatment. Extra care is taken to avoid puncturing the sides of the teeth during treatment. However,if this does occur, the dentist will fill the hole to avoid reinfection. All the branches of the root canal have be carefully cleaned since if any are left, reinfection is highly likely to occur.
