ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Root canal treatment is a term used to refer to a dental practice that involves treatment of the root canal system. The root canal system can get infected due to a variety of reasons such as trauma to the teeth(for example in the event of a fall or an accident), if the filling in the teeth gets eroded and starts to leak or if the teeth suffer from decay. Root canal treatment can be done by an endodontist in several clinical sessions. An average dental practice in Essex will provide this treatment. The treatment involves the following procedures:

Preparation

Your endodontist will take X-rays of the affected tooth to check the level of damage. This helps him determine the most effective treatment to give. Antibiotics are given to the patient to fight off possible infections that might occur during this procedure.

Anaesthetizing the Patient

A local anaesthetic is given to the patient to numb him before the root canal treatment is begun. In some cases, the tooth is already dead and anaesthesia is not necessary.

Pulp Removal

The endodontist the proceeds to remove the infected parts of the pulp. If there any dental abseccesses, he will drain the pus and clean them.

Cleaning the Root Canal

The root canal is usually a very narrow passage in most teeth and to clean it effectively, the orthodontist has to enlarge it first. This is usually the most time consuming part of this dental procedure and might require the patient to make repeat visits to the clinic. Small files are used to enlarge the root canal. The front teeth, also know as incisors, have one root canal and are easier to clean than back teeth that have two or three canals. In the event that it is necessary for the patient to make subsequent visits for the treatment, the opened up canal is sealed off temporarily.

Sealing the Tooth

Once the root canal has been cleaned completely, it is then filled with a tooth filler. This is done to prevent infections from occurring. A crown is sometimes placed over the sealed tooth to strengthen it and guard against the possibility of tooth breakage.

The success rate of Root Canal Treatment depends on several factors such as the patient’s oral hygiene, the biting forces that the tooth is subjected to and the extent of the damage that the tooth had suffered. Dental crowns placed over teeth that have undergone this treatment generally last much longer than teeth which are left bare. The average dental practice in Essex will incorporate a crown into the treatment.
