Porcepain Veneers FAQ
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Cosmetic dentistry practices regularly replace ugly, worn down and discoloured teeth with porcelain veneers. Dentist Essex says that a porcelain veneer covers the front of the tooth and disguises the tooth’s aesthetic problems. Dentistry in Essex is renowned for its smile designs. Essex dentist says that anything from one to all teeth can be transformed in this way. Cosmetic dentists have to be trained on special post graduate courses and they also have to be quite artistic as well as creative.
How Long Will Veneers Last?
Porcelain veneers are made by a specially trained dental technician. Studies show that porcelain veneers can last 10 years on average, but many can last longer. Porcelain veneers life depends on how you look after your teeth and gums.
Porcelain veneers are very strong but can chip or break just like a natural tooth. A bite guard is usually recommended to protect them from grinding at night time. If you protect them with a night bite guard, then porcelain veneers can give you many years of life and they will not discolour!

I Have Veneers That Have Fallen Off – Is That Normal?
It is not normal for porcelain veneers to fall off. There may be many reasons as to why veneers may come off.
- The bite has not been adjusted properly and there is pressure on the veneers
- The surface where the veneers were attached was contaminated with moisture
- The right adhesive was not used to bond on the veneers
It is most important that the correct bonding procedure is carried out, as the slightest hint of moisture or other contaminate will prevent proper bonding of the porcelain veneers.
I Have Discolouration At The Margins Of My Veneers – What Can I Do?
Over time the gum around the porcelain veneers will recede. It depends on your oral hygiene and your brushing techniques. It is very important to visit your cosmetic dentist at least once a year and to visit your hygienist at least twice a year. Over brushing of veneers will encourage the gums to shrink at the margins of the veneer, where they meet the gums.
The only way to rectify the tooth showing around the margins of the teeth is to have the porcelain veneer replaced. This does not mean that all of your veneers need replacing, just the ones that are deficient at the margins.
What Clinical And Laboratory Factors Affect Choice Of Implant Systems?
All implant systems basically work in the same way, the titanium implant replaces the original root of the tooth. Some implant systems allow for immediate placement of teeth onto the implant. With this system it is imperative that the patient eats a very soft diet for three months, so as not to put too much pressure on the implants. Other systems require that, after implant placement, a healing time of three months is observed before the tooth is added.
How Do I Know What Colour My Veneers Should Be?
Porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges and implant teeth are a very personal type of treatment. If you have really dark teeth and are having a combined treatment such as whitening and porcelain veneers then it is best to whiten your teeth first and then match the veneers to this colour. If you are having a full smile makeover then you can choose the exact colour that you want. Always make sure you talk this over with the cosmetic dentist, friends and family as you don’t want to pick a colour that is too white and false looking. A cosmetic dentist will guide you in what to aim for but ultimately it is for you to decide.
