Partial Dentures – How Are They Different From Traditional Dentures?
What Are Partial Dentures?
Partial dentures are removable acrylic replacements of teeth. They can replace one or a few teeth. Partial dentures do not rely on strong teeth either side of the gap so much, like dental bridges. Partial dentures replace a few teeth unlike full dentures which replace all teeth.
Types of Cosmetic Dentures at Dentists in Essex
There are two main types of cosmetic dentures available: -
1. Acrylic (or plastic) dentures
2. Cobalt Chromium (or metal based) dentures – advised when at least some teeth are present
Advantages Of Cobalt Chromium Partial Dentures
1. Better for chewing - more stable - less movement of denture
2. Food is more enjoyable - less coverage of the palate
3. Stronger - metal is very hard, plastic can fracture
4. Lighter and thinner - plastic is more bulky
5. More comfortable
6. Healthier - less gum coverage possible
The cosmetic dentist will carefully select the ideal set up of teeth for your needs based on the shape of your face, your smile and shade requirements. The quality and strength of plastics, the use of cobalt chromium, the use of tooth coloured clips and many other variables affect the total cost of denture treatment. The cosmetic dentist will carefully discuss with you and guide you to which denture will best suit your needs and budget before we commence treatment.
