Longevity of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a fixed a solution in cosmetic dentistry for replacing missing teeth. Tooth loss is due to:

• Trauma - fractured teeth

• Gum disease – gum disease loosens teeth

• Tooth decay – destroys tooth structure

• Dental abscess – can destroy the bone around the tooth

• Smoking – causes gum disease

Gum disease can be prevented by looking after your teeth, cleaning properly, visiting the hygienist and dentist regularly. Tooth decay can be prevented by regular checks and good oral hygiene also by dietary changes, such as low sugar and low acidic food and drink.

Dental bridges and Dental crowns are placed on healthy teeth by a cosmetic dentist. There are only some teeth that can be replaced with dental bridges. An assessment is the first step, by a cosmetic dentist, or a dentist who would be able to recommend the ideal dental bridge treatment for you. Dental bridges are a quick, easy option in cosmetic dentistry to replace teeth. They are fixed, unlike dentures and require good strong healthy teeth to be placed on.

Dental bridges are fixed porcelain replacements of teeth. They can replace one to five teeth with two abutment teeth.

The majority of dental bridges and Dental crowns are made of metal and porcelain. You don’t see the metal as this is the sub structure and the porcelain is bonded to this to make them look like real teeth. Sometimes in cosmetic dentistry, a dental bridge can be made of all porcelain, but the cosmetic dentist would be able to advise you which one is good for you.

A bridge is fixed to the remaining natural teeth by the cosmetic dentist restoring aesthetics and function. There are two types of bridge:

• Fixed – A bridge fitted over prepared abutment teeth. A secure and long-lasting option.

• Adhesive – A sticky bridge which is bonded to natural teeth and requires minimal tooth preparation.

Dental bridges and Dental crowns are 90% successful over a 10 year period. As with all dental crowns and bridges, the patient must be instructed as to how the bridge must be cleaned. Not just around the supporting teeth but under the pontic or false tooth part of the bridge.
