How Do Dental Veneers Work?
Dental veneers were first made in the 1930’s. These first prototypes were used by the Hollywood film studios to enhance the look of actor’s teeth (this is where the nickname ‘Hollywood smile’) comes from. They were very temporary as they were only held on by denture glue! It wasn’t until the 1980’s that two cosmetic dentists hit upon the idea of permanently cementing the veneers to the natural teeth with the aid of hydrofluoric acid gel and specially developed dental glue.
Porcelain veneers or dental veneers are used in a number of different ways in cosmetic dentistry in Essex and Kent. They can be used to disguise badly stained teeth that do not respond to cleaning or whitening procedures. Porcelain veneers or dental veneers are also used to disguise chipped or broken teeth. In some cases porcelain veneers or dental veneers can also be used to disguise teeth that may have gaps between them.
Only small gaps can be disguised in this way. Porcelain veneers or dental veneers can also help to straighten mildly crooked teeth. Sometimes if teeth are worn down, porcelain veneers can restore the teeth to their former glory, or even better! There is however some instances where porcelain veneers or dental veneers cannot be used to disguise crooked teeth. This is when teeth are very crooked indeed and too much of the tooth would have to be polished away to allow for the veneers. In these types of cases where the teeth are very crooked, clear braces are the best option.
Porcelain veneers are wafer thin laminates of porcelain that are bonded to the prepared tooth to give the appearance of even, white, healthy teeth. Many dentists use the analogy that dental veneers do for your teeth what false fingernails do for your hands. In actual fact they almost become part of your teeth and are extremely comfortable and easy to get on with. They perform exactly the same as natural teeth.
Porcelain veneers are made by a specially trained dental technician. A cosmetic dentist must first prepare the teeth and make temporary resin veneers. Records are taken and given to the dental technician and then the porcelain veneers are constructed. The porcelain veneers are then bonded to the teeth, giving you the perfect smile.
Porcelain veneers require minimal tooth preparation; hence you conserve as much tooth as possible. Veneers look very natural and most times much better than the teeth that were there before. They are best done by cosmetic dentist in the dental practice in as little as two to three visits.
Porcelain veneers are very strong but can chip or break just like a natural tooth. A bite guard is usually recommended to protect them from grinding at night time.
