History of Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment is carried out when the pulp inside the tooth is either inflamed or dead. An Endodontist is a specialist dentist who performs this treatment in a dental practice in Essex. Our Endodontist, Sameena, is highly experienced and works at other practices and even hospitals treating patients. She constantly updates her knowledge and regularly attends courses and lectures. Files are used to clean and shape the canals removing the infection. A filling is then placed. A crown is advisable to protect the tooth as Root Canal Treatment can weaken the tooth.
Root Canal Treatment is needed:
• When there is a periapical abscess
• There has been a knock to the tooth
• For preventative reasons
• The nerve has been exposed
The first traces of Endodontics (treatment of the pulp) were found around the century B.C. In Israel’s Negev Desert a skull was found containing a bronze wire in one of its teeth. It is thought to have been used to treat an infected pulp.
Over the following centuries dentists increased their knowledge of tooth pulp and different methods to treat disease relating to it. In the early 1900’s introduction of x-rays and anaesthetics made it more comfortable for the patient to have Endodontics. Advances in technology have allowed us to save teeth that might have to have been extracted. Nickel titanium was used to make the specialized hand files that would clean the canals and Gutta Percha (a latex material) became favourite to fill the canals after the infection had been removed.
It wasn’t until 1963 that Endodontics was officially recognised as a dental specialty by the American Dental Association.
Root Canal Treatment has quite a bad reputation. Go on the internet and you will find loads of horror stories regarding the treatment but in reality it’s really not bad at all. Using the correct equipment and being numbed up properly will ensure that your treatment is painless and actually surprisingly comfortable.
