The Etruscans of northern Italy were making dentures as early as 700BC. They were manufactured out of animal and human teeth, but decayed very rapidly and so had to be remade often.
Teeth were taken from recently deceased humans or in some cases people extracted their own teeth and sold them for the manufacture of dentures. After the battle of Waterloo in 1815 soldiers would scour the battlefield for dead soldiers and extract their teeth with pliers that they brought with them as part of their army kit.
Individual teeth were tied in place by twisting silk thread around the new tooth and the existing teeth in the mouth.
Even Queen Elizabeth the 1st tried to disguise the gaps in her teeth with white material, but this was only for public appearances and behind closed doors she did the same as everybody else and went without! She would have been first in the queue for false teeth if there had been any around.
Full and partial dentures were properly developed in the 18th century and the new breed of dentists gradually got better and better at making them. Keeping the dentures in the mouth was another thing altogether. They came up with stronger and stronger adhesives to make then stay in the mouth. These dentures were still only for appearances sake and were generally taken out to eat.
Porcelain teeth were first produced in 1774 by Alexis Duchateau but broke and chipped very easily. The first British patent was given to Nicholas Dubois De Chemant. He used springs to fasten the denture and the porcelain was provided by Wedgewood.
In 1820 Claudius Ash manufactured dentures in gold and porcelain. They were made to fit fairly well by taking a plaster cast of the patient’s mouth. In the 1850’s vulcanite (hardened rubber) was used to make dentures. It was more flexible and a lot cheaper than other products used in the past.
Dentist Essex says that nowadays resin is used in the manufacture of cosmetic dentures. It is very light and can be made to fit exactly by an experienced technician. The cosmetic dentures are so lifelike that the art of cosmetic denture production can provide dentures that cannot be noticed when amongst natural teeth as part of a partial denture.
Partial dentures are used a lot nowadays as part of the cosmetic dentists’ armamentarium. They are used in cosmetic dentistry where there is no other option to fill a gap.
