History of Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic Dentistry is the branch of dentistry that improves your smile. It can be something simple like Whitening your teeth to remodelling your whole smile with a Smile Makeover. Cosmetic Dentistry is carried out by a Cosmetic Dentist.
Cosmetic Dentistry although popular than ever now, especially at our specialist practice in Essex, has actually been around for thousands of years! Sticks were used to clean teeth as early as 3000BC and the first bristle toothbrush was made from animal hair in the late 1400’s.
Dentures
The first Dentures were made from teeth taken from the dead or extracted or sold from a live donor. Animal teeth were even used! This was around 700BC. This method surprisingly lasted until the 1800’s as the dentures often smelled rotten and quickly deteriorated.
It wasn’t until the last 1700’s that a vast improvement in prosthetic dentistry was made. Porcelain Dentures were first bought to the US in the early 1800’s. They were first made in 1770 but the first patient didn’t receive them for 10 years. Then plaster was used to make moulds of the patient’s mouth to make the dentures fit better.
Crowns and Bridges
Gold was first used in 200AD to make restorations such as Crowns and Bridges. This was more for restoration purposes and not cosmetic reasons.
Tooth Whitening
Ancient Egyptians made their own concoction of pumice stone and vinegar which they used to scrub the stains off their teeth and make them look cleaner and whiter. The worst method of tooth whitening that was used was by the Romans. They mixed toothpaste with urine as urine contains ammonia which is actually a natural tooth whitening substance. Unbelievably this was used well into the 18th century!
1989 was when Teeth Whitening really came about. Two dentists came up with the idea of using Carbamide Peroxide to whiten teeth and bleaching trays were invented.
Dental Veneers
Dental Veneers was around way before Teeth Whitening. Charles Pincus used Dental Veneers as a temporary fix for movie stars in the 1930’s. They were held on with denture adhesive but would fall off after a short period of time. In 1982 a new technique allowed dentists to permanently bond porcelain Dental Veneers to teeth.
