4 Causes Of Tooth Loss

Tooth loss is a problem that can be a source of great discomfort both physically and psychologically. The physical problems that are associated with tooth loss include the loss of the ability to chew some types of food as well as poor speech. It is a fact that loss of teeth such as the molars and the premolars will greatly limit the kinds of food that the victims of such loss can chew with ease. Psychologically, the loss of teeth affects the victims by reducing the self esteem of the victims. Most of the people who have got missing teeth are not as confident and do not have as much self esteem as their counterparts who still have all of their teeth.

It is therefore important to find out some of the most common causes of the absence of or loss of teeth since once you are armed with this kind of knowledge, you will be better able to stay away from these causes and keep you teeth a while longer, that is for the causes that can be avoided. Note that some of the causes are completely unavoidable and the best thing you can do is to find alternative, such as dental implants, to replace them when they occur. Some of the most common causes of tooth loss include;

• Old age- old age often takes its toll on the teeth of most of the senior citizens. It is very rare to find very old people over the age of ninety years who still have all of their teeth intact. As you age progresses, the gums progressively get weakest and the roots of the teeth become loose. Eventually the teeth simply fall off. The best thing for you to do is to take good care of your teeth so as to postpone the loss of teeth due to old age as much as possible.

• Congenital absence-congenital absence refers to a situation where a tooth fails to grow where it was supposed to. Everyone expects that anytime a child loses any of his or her primary tooth, another tooth will grow in that place to replace it. Sometimes however, such a replacement fails to grow, leaving the victim with a gap in the teeth.

• Trauma- This is by far the greatest cause of loss of teeth among people who are not yet in the bracket where they can lose teeth due to old age. It is common for people to knock out their teeth whenever the teeth make hard impact with other objects e.g. when you fall down

• Dental diseases- The most common disease that causes loss of teeth is periodontal diseases or gum diseases. The periodontal diseases refer to the infections in the gums that lead the loss of the bone therein. When this occurs, teeth simply fall off since they have nothing to support them.
