Does the NHS offer patients Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic Dentistry is used to improve the appearance of your teeth. Different treatments are used to change the colour and shape of your teeth. Cosmetic Dentistry is carried out by a Cosmetic Dentist. Some Beauty Clinics offer some Cosmetic Treatments such as Teeth Whitening but these treatments should only be carried out by a Dentist.

General Dentistry such as fillings and Root Canal Treatment can be done on the NHS. General Dentistry is classed as a necessity as it deals with ensuring your mouth, teeth and gums are healthy and maintaining the current fillings you already have or may need.

Cosmetic Dentistry isn’t covered on the NHS as it’s not clinically necessary. Cosmetic Dentistry is not a necessity as it’s not treatment you need but treatment you want.

Treatment covered on the NHS:

o Examinations

o Scale and Polish

o Fillings

o Root Canal Treatment

o Crowns

o Bridges

o Dentures

If there is a medical need for Implants or Orthodontic Treatment then this is available on the NHS.

Treatment not covered on the NHS:

o Teeth Whitening

o Porcelain Veneers

o Cosmetic Crowns and Bridges

o Cosmetic Dentures

o Implant Treatment (if not medically needed)

o Orthodontic Treatment (if not medically needed)

As Cosmetic Dentistry is not covered by the NHS it does not mean that your NHS Dentist cannot and will not do the treatment, its just means that you will have to pay privately for the treatment in addition to any NHS treatment.
