Does Root Canal Treatment have to be Painful?

What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root Canal Treatment is needed when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected or inflamed caused by bacteria. Sometimes no symptoms can occur; infection is shown only on x-rays. Otherwise you may experience pain on biting or sensitivity on hot or cold. If left untreated you could end up losing the tooth. The success rate of Root Canal Treatment is 85-95%.
What actually happens?
The Endodontist accesses the canals and uses files to clean out the infection and remove the nerve. The bacteria is flushed out using disinfectant and a root filing is placed. You may experience some tenderness around the area but this should pass within a few days. Normal painkillers can help with this. A permanent filling or crown is placed a few weeks later to protect the tooth. Root treated teeth are more likely to break as they are weaker.
Does Root Canal Treatment hurt?
If done properly it shouldn’t hurt. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and won’t be started until you are completely numb. Enough time is booked for the appointment, usually between 1-2 hours depending on the tooth being treated. The best equipment and materials are used by our Endodontist to ensure your Root Canal Treatment is carried out properly and comfortably. In fact some patients have fallen asleep whilst having treatment!
How much can I expect to pay?
