DIGITAL DENTISTRY

Introduction

Many digital types of equipment are available to implant dentists, general dentists and cosmetic dentists for use in their work. The advancements in digital dental technology enable patients to have modern solutions to dental problems. These digital technologies enable dentists to provide leading-edge treatment performed in efficient, comfortable and effective way. Some of the digital technologies used in dentistry are digital impressions, imaging for implant placement, digitally based surgical guides, CAD/CAM restorations, computerized case presentations, electronic prescriptions and digital radiography.

In-Office Digital Technologies

The following digital dental technologies can be used in the office;

CAD/CAM – These are acronyms for computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacture. They enable restorations such as onlays, inlays, veneers and crowns to be fabricated by computerized milling technology. The dentist can work in in-office CAD/CAM to finalize same-day tooth restorations. This considerably shortens restoration work that would otherwise need two or more sessions to complete. The technology also considerably shortens the procedure for extensive restoration conducted in the laboratory that uses CAD/CAM technology.

Cone Beam CT - This is computerized tomography for producing quick 3-D image of the patient's maxillofacial or oral anatomy. The image is used to prepare implant surgical guides which the periodontists or oral surgeons use when fixing dental implants. Such pre-surgical imaging methods enable more predictable and easier implant placement and lead to treatment success.

Diagnodent - This is equipment used for early cavity detection. It uses laser and sound pulse to detect caries much earlier than other methods. Early detection enables treatment to start early thus limiting the extent of dental decay and preserving more healthy tooth structure.

Digital X-rays - Digital radiographs use a sensor to capture and process dental images and show them on a computer screen. They cause less discomfort than traditional X-rays. Their radiation exposure is also much less. The images can be magnified to show greater detail thus enabling accurate diagnosis and more appropriate and timely treatments.

Internet - The internet provides easier patient management options. Appointments can be made over the internet. Communication, payments and follow ups can also be done online. Software programs enable dentists to securely exchange details of a patient's case with other specialists and their laboratories. This ensures proper care and avoids unnecessary patient visits to the office. Online real-time chat consultations can be done when the treatment is on progress. Any functional or esthetic issues can be conferred and implemented.

Intra-Oral Camera - This camera produces accurate images of the teeth and supporting structures. The dentist, patient and technician can easily identify tooth defects. It also enables better understanding of the necessity for the treatment recommended. These images lead to improved dental hygiene practices because they show where to focus when brushing.

Other digital dental technologies include Dental Lasers, Optical Scanners, TekScan and The Wand. These technologies enable patient consultations and collaborations with other dental specialists to be done faster. The dentists have access to more detailed and immediate information than in the past. Quality of care has improved due to accurate diagnosis and precision restorations.
