Introduction

Dental veneer is procedure in cosmetic dentistry performed by placing a thin layer or shell of colored porcelain or composite material on the surfaces of teeth. It is done to hide uneven tooth spacing or alignment, worn tooth enamel, discoloration and cracks or chips.

Cosmetic Veneers

They are classified as cosmetic dentistry because they enable the smile to be bright and white with shapely and beautifully aligned teeth. They are also used to protect the surfaces of damaged teeth and to avoid other complicated, more extensive and expensive treatments. Other advantages of veneers are durability and minimal removal of the original tooth structure. They are therefore more simple and safe to install as compared to crowns.

Cosmetic Dental Problems

Dental veneers can be used to solve almost all cosmetic dental problems such as;

Worn enamel - The enamel is the hard, thin, translucent material covering of the tooth. With time, the enamel may become worn, discolored and dulled. Such discoloration and wear may be a natural aging process or genetic. It is sometimes caused by soft drinks, tea, coffee, smoking or certain medications.

Wear and tear - Teeth wear down naturally as one ages. Aged teeth are very likely to develop chips, cracks or uneven appearance.

Genetics - Some people naturally develop teeth abnormal spacing which gets wider with age.

Uneven teeth - Uneven teeth may be caused by general wear and tear or tooth grinding.

Materials

The two most common materials used to make dental veneers are porcelain and composite resin. Composite veneers and indirect porcelain veneers are prepared by a dental technician in the dental laboratory. Direct composite veneers are made by the Dentist Kent in his office. Veneers are referred to as direct if they are processed directly on the teeth and as indirect if processed outside the mouth. Porcelain Veneers are the more appropriate solution for severe cases of dullness, wear, discoloration, cracking, extensive chipping, spacing or uneven teeth. Direct composite veneers are sometimes referred to as bonding or composite bonding. It is effective, inexpensive and minimally invasive procedure to correct and restore small cracks, chips and discoloration.

When to Use Veneers

Removal of any natural structure of the tooth is permanent and cannot be reversed. Cosmetic dentists try to use options with the most minimal invasion. Composite veneers or porcelain veneers are appropriate if the teeth are severely discolored or dull. Other advantages of veneers are durability and good at enhancing the beauty of the smile and mouth and other features of the face. This is because the facial features are supported by well shaped teeth.

Care

Veneers must not be abused after they are installed. They consist of thin composite layers or porcelain shells that can get damaged or broken. Avoid eating hard foods such as carrots. The Dentist Kent may recommend wearing a protective appliance when sleeping which is especially applicable to a bruxer.
