Dental implants have their origin in Sweden where they were developed by Professor Branemark. They were actually discovered through serendipity(a happy accident) by the professor. He discovered that Titanium bonded irreversibly to bone tissue,something that many scientist of the time considered impossible. The professor was able to demonstrate that titanium could be structurally fused to living bone tissue without tissue damage or rejection by the body. He called this process osseointegration. Statistics in the country show that as many as 69 percent of adults aged 34-44 years have lost at least one permanent tooth either to a root canal,gum disease ,tooth decay or an accident.
