Dental Implants FAQs

What are Teeth Implants?

Dental implants (otherwise known as teeth implants) are titanium replacements for a tooth root that is placed in the jaw bone.  On top of the dental implants are placed crowns, bridges or dentures depending on what’s best for your mouth.

How are Dental Implants placed?

Teeth implants are usually under local anaesthetic the dental implant is placed into the jaw bone and left to heal for 3-6 months.  Once healed the teeth implant can be restored.

Are Dental Implants successful?

Yes, more than 90% of teeth implants are successful over a 10 year period.

What if there is not enough bone for the Dental Implant?

If there is not sufficient bone then a bone graft can be done and then dental implants placed.

Who places Dental Implants?

A dental implantologist or a dentist who specialises in dental implants places dental implants.  They have undergone specific training to do this procedure.

How Long Will Dental Implant Treatment Take?

After you have been examined by the cosmetic dentist, he will require you to have a CT scan. Depending on whether you have enough bone to have implant treatment, your treatment will now begin. Once all the different checks have been performed, the implants will be placed and there will be a healing time of three months. An x ray will be taken after three months and if Osseo integration has taken place then the final stage of the implant process will begin. An impression will be taken and approximately two weeks later the crown fitted.

What Is Bone Grafting And When Can It Be Used?

Bone grafting or augmentation can be performed if there is not enough bone present to be able to have an implant. Mostly artificial bone is used and there is no chance of rejection of the graft and no compromise of religious beliefs. After placement of the graft it takes approximately two to three months to integrate with existing bone. This is then the time to start implant treatment.

I Grind My Teeth At Night – Can I Have Implants?

It is perfectly ok to have implant treatment if you grind your teeth. After you have finished your implant treatment, your cosmetic dentist will take a special type of impression. This impression will then be sent to the lab who will fabricate a special type of bite guard that you wear at night. This stops the teeth from meeting so that you cannot do any damage to the implants.

What Is An Implant Dentist?
