Dental Filings
Dental filings are used in cosmetic dentistry to fill cavities in the teeth. This helps prevent further damage to the teeth .Traditional dental filings were made of amalgam (containing mercury), silver or gold. These types of filings have the disadvantage of being highly conspicuous and tend to darken with the passing of time.
Modern dental filings are made of composite resin and are used as an alternative to traditional metal dental filings. They are made of plastic resin. They have the advantage of having a natural colour as well as being strong and durable. Patients with broken filings or teeth with cavities can have composite resin filings applied by their cosmetic dentists. Dental filings that are made of amalgam or metal filings can also be replaced with composite resin filings.
The procedure of applying dental filings is performed under a local anesthetic. The cosmetic dentist first removes the decayed portions of the teeth before applying the filing. Removal of the decayed teeth portions is accomplished using drills, a dental laser or micro air abrasion. Composite resin filings do not require a lot of the teeth cavity to be edged out since they can be used in thin layers. Sometimes the cosmetic dentist might decide to use a special liner to protect the nerve if the decayed portion extends close to the nerve.
Once the decayed parts are removed, the cosmetic dentists then use a dental material to open the pores of the dentin as well as roughen the surface of the enamel. A bond resin is then applied and this sticks to the composite filing. The bond resin is similar in composition to the composite resin bond, the main difference being that it is much more fluid and can easily fill in the tiny pores. A high intensity light is then used to harden and cure the resin.
The process of applying the resin is done in stages with thin layers being applied and then hardened using a high intensity light before the next layer is applied. After the process of applying the resin is complete, the cosmetic dentist then uses an articulating paper to smoothen the filing and make sure that the patient's bite is correct.
The cosmetic dentist might then decide to use a dental crown if the patient has had a root canal on the tooth or if the enamel of the tooth is weakened and shows signs of chipping. This helps to protect the tooth from further damage.
In cases where a large percentage of the biting surface of the molars is badly decayed, the cosmetic dentist might decide to use an inlay or an onlay. Inlays are placed between the tooth’s cusps while an onlay can cover several cusps. These are made of a resin that has got a natural teeth colour. They can also be made of porcelain or a gold alloy.
