Cosmetic Dentures FAQs
What Is A Cosmetic Denture?
Cosmetic dentures are specially designed dentures to improve aesthetics of an individual. Comfort and cosmetics are of extreme importance.
Who Has Cosmetic Dentures?
People who wish to improve the aesthetics of previous dentures. Or people who wish to close gaps or replace missing teeth.
What Types Of Cosmetic Dentures Are Possible?
There are two main types of cosmetic dentures –
- Acrylic - gum coloured plastic dentures.
- Cobalt Chromium - metal based dentures with gum coloured plastic.
What Are The differences Between Acrylic And Chromium Dentures?
If there are teeth remaining then chromium cosmetic dentures are more stable. They cover less gum area and are stronger. If all teeth are missing then full cosmetic dentures are better in plastic and are lighter. The dentist is best to decide which denture is most suitable for you.
How Long Do Cosmetic Dentures Take To Make?
Usually four visits. Two impressions visits and a bite registration. A trial visit and finally a fit visit.
Why Can lower Full Dentures Be Looser Than Uppers?
With uppers dentures you get suction between the denture and the palate which has a comparatively large surface area. Contrastingly the lower dentures sit on thinner ridges which do not get the same suction as the palate. Also the tongue is around the lower denture and it has a strong muscle which can move the lower denture.
What Are The Alternatives To Cosmetic Dentures?
If you have good strong teeth present either side of the gaps then you could have a fixed dental bridge. The other option is dental implants which are independent of other teeth. Implants can retain dentures, crowns, or bridge work.
