Can Children have Clear Braces?

Clear Braces are the latest in technology in Orthodontics. They are better than the standard metal braces as they are more aesthetically pleasing and work quicker.

 

Clear Braces are suitable if you have:

o Crowded teeth

o Crooked teeth

o Gaps

o Protruding teeth

o If you have difficulty chewing food

 

Providing they are medically required metal braces are available on the NHS. Clear Braces however are not. Clear Braces are seen as the cosmetic option of Orthodontics as they are clear and more discreet. Should you need braces then only metal braces would be offered to you on NHS. For Clear Braces you would have to pay privately.

 

Children are usually told around the age of 11-12 years if they will need braces. Clear Braces are an option for children but there are advantages and disadvantages of children having Clear Braces.

 

Advantages

o They are clear so are more discreet.

o They work quicker

o Can be removed for special occasions

o Easier to keep teeth clean

 

Disadvantages

o Have to be worn for 20 hours a day to obtain the full effect

o Are not fixed so children are less likely to wear them

o More likely to be lost or broken

 

Anyone having Orthodontic treatment will need to have either a fixed or removable retainer. The retainer stops the teeth from moving back to the original position. The best retainer to have is the fixed option as you will never forget to wear it and you will most probably forget you are wearing it!

 

There are many different types of Clear Braces. Each one used to treat certain problems. Your Dentist will assess which Brace is best suitable for you.
