A perfect smile calls for beautiful teeth and it is not practical to try to separate the two. If you want to have a great smile, then you must first try to have beautiful white teeth. It is unfortunate that not every person is blessed with natural white teeth that give them the great smile that they so desire. Most people have problems of teeth discoloration, which deny them the great smiles that they would otherwise have. This problem calls for a very careful examination of some of the most common causes that can be associated with the coloring of the teeth since when one is armed with such knowledge concerning the major causes of tooth discoloration, they are better able to prevent the same by guarding against those causes. It is important to mention at this point that, as will become evident from the subsequent discussion, a number of these common causes of teeth coloration are not entirely preventable.

Teeth can take any of a number of different colors and the color that they eventually adopt is determined largely by the kind of substance or factor that are causing such coloration. Ideally, the color of healthy normal teeth should be white and conventional trends dictate that the whiter the teeth are the better for their owner. So, what are the main factors that cause the coloration of teeth?

  • Food and other consumables- This is one of the most common causes of teeth coloration. The kind of food that you eat will be very vital in determining the color of your teeth, if all other relevant factors are held constant. It is for this reason that parents try to guard their children against the extensive consumption of sugary items such as sweets and biscuits. In addition, there are a number of other consumables that can cause the teeth to take on brown or yellow shades. These substances include tea, coffee, tobacco and cola.
  • Fluorosis- As the name suggests, this is the coloration of teeth due to fluorine. Fluorine is a component in the manufacture of many commercial tooth pastes due to its bleaching properties. However, if fluorine is consumed in excessive quantities, it can occasion changes in the color of teeth from white to chalky or brown.
  • Genetics- Teeth color has been linked to heredity and genes by various studies conducted to investigate the same. However, even teeth that are colored by heredity can still be corrected and whitened through cosmetic dentistry.
  • Improper oral hygiene- The manner in which you take care of your teeth will be fundamental in determining how white you are able to keep them. Poor oral hygiene in terms of dental cleaning generally causes teeth coloration.
