A new study shows that gum disease may significantly increase the risk of cancer in the head and neck area.
Recent research shows that people with head and neck cancer were much more likely to have gum disease than people without cancer.

Gum Disease association
Each millimetre of bone loss due to gum disease or periodontitis was associated with more than four times risk of head and neck cancer. This research also adds to risk of health problems such as heart disease related to gum disease.

Smoking and periodontistis and cancer
The research also found that cancer rates according to tobacco use, it found that it was more common in former smokers than current smokers.
Gum disease has many influencing factors such as smoking, stress, genetics and oral health. It is important to have regular health checks at the dentist for gum health and any tooth related problems.

Treatment of gum disease or periodontitis.
Gum disease can be treated by a periodontist or a dental hygienist in a dental practice. Root planning is the first line of treatment of gum disease. This is the careful debridement of the roots of affected teeth so the gums have the chance to reattach their lost support to the teeth. This is repeated until results are seen.
If this should fail, gum surgery is the next option of treatment. Cosmetic dentistry can then also be used to improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth.
Perfect Smile Spa is a cosmetic dental practice that treats gum disease and carries out regular oral cancer screening.
