What is Gum Disease?
Studies show that at least 80% of the population has got some form of gum disease. Gum disease is caused by the bacteria which reside in the plaque and tartar that forms on the teeth. The bacteria produce harmful chemicals that make your gums bleed and sometimes recede.
If you don’t remove the plaque, eventually you will have pain and infection in your mouth.
How are Gum and Heart Disease Connected?
Bacteria found in gum disease are also found in heart disease. This could cause serious heath problems if left to its own devices!
How is Gum Disease Treated?
Gum disease can be treated by a dental hygienist in the dental practice. The first treatment of gum disease is a procedure called root planning. This is the careful cleaning of the roots of the teeth so that the gum has a chance to re attach itself to the teeth therefore tightening the pocket around the teeth so that the bacteria cannot get in.
What Will Happen if Gum Disease is Not Treated?
If the infection in your gums is allowed to progress it will spread and cause your teeth to loosen.
It is gum disease and not dental decay that is the biggest cause of tooth loss.
