TYPES OF COSMETIC DENTURE

Cosmetic dentures are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments.
There are two main types of cosmetic dentures available:-

  1. Acrylic (or plastic) dentures
  2. Cobalt Chromium (or metal based) cosmetic dentures – advised when at least some teeth are present

ADVANTAGES OF COBALT CHROMIUM DENTURES

  • Better chewing - more stable - less movement of denture
  • Food more enjoyable - less coverage of the palate
  • Stronger - metal is very hard, plastic can fracture
  • Lighter and thinner - plastic is more bulky
  • More comfortable
  • More healthy - less gum coverage possible

STAGES IN COSMETIC DENTURE MAKING

  • The first impressions - Required to make moulds and a custom made Special tray
  • The second impression - A very accurate impression is taken by the cosmetic dentist
  • The bite stage - The complexity of your bite is recorded, and the colour and shape of the teeth chosen. (It is helpful to bring along any old photographs you may have to show the cosmetic dentist how your teeth used to look at this visit).
  • The try-in stage - The teeth are set up in wax to confirm the appearance, fit and the bite
  • The fitting stage - The denture is carefully adjusted by the cosmetic
  • dentist to fit in the mouth
  • The review stage – At this stage the cosmetic dentist assess how you are getting on with the denture(s)

COST OF DENTURE TREATMENT

At our dental practice, the cosmetic dentists have a consistently high standard of clinical work using modern denture-making techniques. The variables in cost are: -

  • The laboratory - An advanced laboratory which specialises in the requirements of cosmetic dentistry will have better equipment and materials.
  • The technician - A skilled, experienced cosmetic denture technician will produce a higher standard of work compared to an average technician. This ensures more comfortable and better fitting dentures.
  • The materials used - Denture making technology has really come a long way in the last few years due to advancements in cosmetic dentistry.

The cosmetic dentist will carefully select the ideal set up of teeth for your needs based on the shape of your face, your smile and shade requirements. The quality and strength of plastics, the use of cobalt chromium, use of gold or tooth coloured clips and many other variables affect the total cost of denture treatment. The cosmetic dentist will carefully discuss with you and guide you to which denture will best suit your needs and budget before we commence treatment.
