- What are Dental
Implants?
A dental implant is a titanium replacement for a tooth root that is placed
in the jawbone. On the top of these dental
implants are placed either crowns, bridges or dentures depending on
what’s appropriate for your mouth.
- Dental Implant
Process
After a thorough evaluation including xrays, CT scan and planning from
study models, dental implants are placed into the jawbone under local
anaesthetic. The dental implant is left to heal so that the bone can
integrate with the dental implant. After healing the dental implant
can be used to support a crown, bridge or denture.
- Are dental implants
safe and how long do they last?
Dental implant treatment has a success rate more than 90% over a 10 year
period. In fact titanium, the metal used is used widely for hip
replacements.
- Can anyone have
dental implants?
After the initial assessment, x-rays and CT scan if necessary, the dentist
will be able to tell you if you can have dental implants. There are
only a minority of cases where dental implants cannot be placed e.g. if
not sufficient bone – however this is where bone graft procedure can be
used and then dental implants placed.
- What are the
alternatives to Dental Implants?
Dental Bridges or cosmetic dentures can also be used to replace teeth if
you do not wish to have dental implants.
