clock December 2, 2008 06:54 by author mike

Cosmetic dentist, London and all over U.K. are finding that many people are enquiring about their gummy smiles.  The gum lift procedure can correct uneven gum lengths and excessive gum showing on smiling.  If you have a gummy smile and are considering treatment the following factors are very important.

1)  Medical Health and Gum reshaping
Before gum reshaping can be done you must be of good medical health. For e.g. if you have a bleeding disorder this was not controlled the healing of the gums could be affected.

2)  Cosmetic dentist and gum lift
Cosmetic dentist use special advanced equipment to carry out  gum reshaping.

3)  Bone levels and gum reshaping
Measurements will taken to check whether bone needs to be removed if their is excessive gum showing.  This is called hard tissue gum reshaping.  If the gum lift is involving the gums only - this is called soft tissue gum lift.  The cosmetic dentist will assess and let you know what is best for you.

4)  Oral hygiene and gum reshaping
Your oral hygiene must be in perfect order for gum lift procedure to succeed long term. Seeing the dental hygienist is very important in the long term success of gum reshaping treatment.

5) Smoking and gum reshaping
Smoking will significantly reduce the long term success of gum lift treatment. Smoking can also cause gum disease.

6)  Time and gum lift
After gum lift treatment time must be given for healing.  This is normally 1-2 weeks.

7)  Success of gum reshaping
The success rate of gum disease treatment is high as long as there is good after care and no smoking. In some cases gum can return back to its original position.

8)  Cost of gum lift treatment
The cost of gum lift treatment can vary from cosmetic dentist to cosmetic dentist but is a great way to recontour gums around teeth.

9)  Painless Gum lift procedure

What Can Be Done About Gum Recession and Tooth Wear

clock August 26, 2008 00:59 by author mike

The recession of gums and wearing away of teeth occurs commonly in adults.
It is important: -

1. To identify the cause of the problem.

2. To give preventive advice so that the problem does not get worse.

3. To provide appropriate restorative treatment where necessary.

What Causes of gum recession / tooth wear?

Use of a hard toothbrush.
1. Inappropriate brushing technique.
2. Frequent use of abrasive toothpastes.
3. Diet related and other more complex reasons e.g. high acidic
4. drinks and bulimia.
5. Grinding and clenching of teeth causes tooth to tooth contact and 5.wear of tooth surface.

Problems with gum recession / tooth wear:

1. Sensitivity of teeth where worn or receded.
2. Possible decay of the affected areas.
3. Darker, discoloured and worn appearance of the tooth.
4. Plaque and food collection.

Although brow lift surgery is often performed on its own, it is also commonly performed alongside other facial cosmetic surgery procedures such as eyelid surgery or face lift plastic surgery. Therefore the exact surgical procedure which is used to perform your brow lift surgery will depend on your requirements which you can discuss in depth with your cosmetic surgeon

Restoring worn teeth or 'abrasion' cavities:

Modern tooth coloured materials and the latest bonding techniques allow dentists to restore the amount of tooth lost, thus preventing further damage.
In most cases no injection or drilling is necessary.
Restoring the teeth will protect the tooth surface, stop sensitivity and improve aesthetics. If a lot of tooth surface is lost a Dental Veneer, Crown or On lay may be necessary to restore the tooth. It is worth seeing a cosmetic dentist if the aesthetics are important to you.

Preventive advice:

1. Use of a medium/soft toothbrush.
2. Correct your brushing technique.
3. Placing toothbrush under hot water for a few seconds (to soften the bristles).
4. Regular dental checks and hygiene visits.

Tips For Keeping Your Teeth and Gums Healthy

clock August 22, 2008 01:15 by author mike

There are many ways of how you can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Avoid sugary foods and drinks. Acidic drinks like fresh juices and fizzy drinks are also best avoided. There are many hidden sugars in foods so check before you eat. Avoid brushing directly after having sugary food or drink. Wait about an hour or chew sugar free gum so that acid levels in the mouth neutralize.

Avoid smoking as it predisposes you to gum disease. Brush and floss your teeth twice daily and have regular check ups at least twice a year.

Home Teeth Whitening
Special accurate impressions are taken of your teeth and custom trays are made into which teeth whitening gel is placed and worn for about one hour a day. Usually within 2 weeks you have a nice white smile.

To achieve the best teeth whitening result a combination of laser and home whitening is recommended.

Smoking and Gum disease

Smoking has a serious affect on gum health and should be best avoided. It can cause gum disease and cancer. Oral cancer is a major killer of cancer patients. Smoking can also cause bad breath and stain teeth severely.

If you are one of the many people that suffer from Bad Breath - Don't worry there is a cure!

The main reasons for bad breath are gum disease, poor oral hygiene, broken fillings or smoking. Gum disease can be treated at the dentist. Oral hygiene can be improved by correct cleaning techniques, again shown by the dentist. Any broken teeth or fillings can also be corrected.

Dealing with Dental Emergencies if a dentist is not available!

5) Abscess - To help with swollen mouth caused by a tooth abscess, take antibiotics if you can get them. Also hot water and salt mouth wash is helpful.

6) Toothache- The best pain killers to take are ibuprofen. If you are allergic to this then take paracetamol.

7) Broken Tooth- If there is an open cavity you can place temporary filling material available from the chemist.
