A Brief History of Teeth Implant Treatment

At Perfect Smile Spa in Essex we have been placing Dental Implants for many years. We have a very high success rate and our Teeth Implants last many years.

Teeth Implants are small titanium rods that are inserted into the bone to replace the gaps in your mouth.

The idea of Dental Implants was discovered by luck. In 1952 Dr Branemark was carrying out some research and found that it was impossible to recover the titanium microscopes that he had imbedded into bone. He found that the bone had irreversibly bonded itself to the titanium. After more research and experiments he found that bone would integrate around titanium without any long term soft tissue inflammation. He also found that rejection of the titanium rod was incredibly low. Branemark named this osseointergration.

The first patient to have titanium rods implanted was in 1965. An edentulous patient had several Dental implants placed and crowns attached which are still functioning perfectly more than 45 years later.

Depending on the system used Dental Implants can cost from £500 – £2000. At Perfect Smile Spa in Essex our Teeth Implants cost £1400 each. With the current spring offer reducing that amount to £1885. Our Cosmetic Dentist would first carry out a full examination and xrays including a full mouth scan. This would show whether there is enough bone available for the Dental Implants to be placed. Sometimes it is necessary for a CT Scan to be taken. This will be done at another practice. Dental Implant placement takes approximately 1 hour, the more teeth Implants to be placed the longer it takes. 3-6 months later the post is attached and an impression taken. Two weeks later the final crown is placed.

Dental Implants are not only for function purposes but for cosmetic reasons too e.g. if you have a gap in the front of your mouth. As well as Crowns Dental Bridges can be fixed onto them as well as dentures. One of the biggest pains about dentures is that they move around a lot. Being fixed onto Teeth Implants stops this allowing you to eat and speak more easily.
