Dental Crown Treatment: A Long Term Solution
Cosmetic Dentistry Articles >>
What is a Dental crown?
Dental crowns protect heavily filled teeth from fracture by preserving the remaining tooth structure. It is a common cosmetic dentistry procedure.
Advantages of dental crowns:
- Aesthetic – improving the appearance of a tooth
- Comfort – smooth, polished surfaces
- Health – less plaque retention due to smooth and accurate shape of the crown
What is involved?
Normally two visits are required by the cosmetic dentist and the treatment is painless. The first (longer) visit to the dental practice involves preparation of the tooth, impression taking and fabrication of a temporary crown. The shade is also selected at this visit. For highly cosmetic results (e.g. a front crown) it is advisable for the patient to visit our dental laboratory for accurate colour matching. The dental crown is fitted approximately two weeks later at the dental practice.
What types of dental crowns are there?
As cosmetic dentistry has advanced a number of different types of dental crowns have become available.
- All porcelain crowns.
- Porcelain bonded to metal crowns.
- Gold alloy crowns.
- Tooth coloured transitional crowns.
What affects the cost of dental crowns?
The cost of dental crown treatment varies due to three main factors:
- The laboratory – Usually astate-of-the-art private laboratory chosen by the cosmetic dentist
- The technician - A skilled, experienced technician, selected for his artistic skill by the cosmetic dentist, would make precision crowns finished to a high standard using a microscope
- The materials used - The quality of the metal alloys and tooth-coloured porcelains is a high priority for the cosmetic dentist
A high quality dental crown is like a piece of jewellery requiring meticulous clinical and dental precision. This will enable you to function in comfort and with confidence over a long period of time.
