Cosmetic Dentistry and Botox

What Is Botox?

Botox is a brand name for botulinum toxin and is used to block the release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that cause muscles to contract. In the medical field, botulinum toxin is injected directly into hyperactive muscles by the cosmetic dentist. It has been safely and effectively used for treatment of strabismus (cross-eye) and blepharospasm (lid spasm) since the early eighties. Botox is commonly used in cosmetic dentistry to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles.

How Does Botox Work?

Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often results in deep frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Injecting Botox into the affected area temporarily paralyses the underlying muscles responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. The wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether.

How Long Does Botox Work For?

The initial effects of botox treatment become visible within 48 to 72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks.

Your facial expression becomes more relaxed but not mask-like. The overall result is very natural.
The effect of treatment generally lasts for 4-6 months. Re-treatment is then required.

What Are The Side Effects?

Botox injections are generally a safe and effective treatment method when carried out by a skilled cosmetic dentist.

Nevertheless, certain side effects can occur but, like the intended treatment effects, they are mostly reversible.
At this appointment, the cosmetic dentist will inform you about the potential side effects of Botox treatment, contra-indications to therapy, and potential drug interactions.

Potential side effects:

  • Bruising or swelling at the injection site.
