The causes of gum disease
Cosmetic Dentistry Articles >>
Gum disease is a disease of the mouth which is a direct result of poor dental health and oral hygiene and manifests itself in form of inflammation of the gums. The occurrence of gum disease not only imparts an unpleasant feeling in one’s mouth but also causes the slow deteriation of the gums eventually resulting in the destruction of the entire structure of the mouth and the jaw.
As any practicing dentist would say, one of the causes of gum disease is poor dental hygiene. Individuals who do not brush their teeth frequently experience a deposition of plaque which if not removed turns into tartar and which in turn is responsible for causing swelling and irritation in the gums.
Many of the cases of gum disease which come to the dental practice for treatment are smokers as well since smoking deteriorates oral health and enhances the chances of gum disease.
On inquiry a dentist would list many other causes of gum disease like high stress, genetics, radiation, poorly done fillings and expectant mothers, teenagers and women in menopause are the segments of population which are particularly susceptible to gum disease.
A dentist who has an active dental practice comes across various types of gum diseases on a daily basis many of which are forms of bacterial infection capable of causing irreversible damage to the attachment fibers and supporting bone within the mouth.
When a gum disease is detected by the dentist in its early stage it is referred to as gingivitis and it is caused by the build-up of plaque and tartar due to poor standards of oral hygiene. It is also caused due to smoking, ageing, stress, poor nutrition, hormonal fluctuations as well as medications and is manifested in form of red, swollen and puffy gums. As a dentist would recommend, it is advisable to treat gingivitis before it aggravates into a more serious condition known as aggressive periodontitis.
This is the next stage in which the bone around the teeth is damaged and there is painless bleeding of gums as an indication of the presence of disease. The ultimate stage is the chronic periodontitis which is characterized by pocket formation or recession of gums and causes inflammation within the attachment fibers and damage in the supporting bone.
The most effective way of preventing gum disease is to visit a dentist regularly or alternatively undergo a thorough oral check-up at a reputed dental practice.
